I’ve become a better writer over the school year. I am more confident now, before I would not be so sure and use words like “Uhm and Yeahhh.” I use to fly through and not always take my time on writing but now I think more about what I am putting on to my blog or paper. I know I could get better at writing but I have made it a long way.
That small reflection was only 70 words so I will be writing about this summer now. On the last day of school, I will be with my boyfriend and all my friends. At 7 pm we are starting a bonfire and we are going to throw our homework in it and watch it burn. I am so excited. Also, there will be soda, smores and chips. There will tons of people there including me, my family, my best friend and her family, some of her friends and my boyfriend. The bonfire goes to 11 pm and that is when people will start to leave. Shaylee and I will probably have a sleepover and sleep in the next day. On Friday, May 30th is my boyfriends and my 9 month anniversary so we will be going out to eat maybe or going to a movie. I have to work on Monday, June 1st. Work has been getting better, now I am actually pretty good at getting residents’ orders. I also am doing Upward Bound which is a fun summer school so I can be ahead in high school.

Work has been going good. I only make a couple mistakes each night. I’m usually in section 4, which has 3 tables that each serve 4 people. One time I was in section 10 or something and I had tables 16 and 21 which I only had six people overall! Most of the residents are nice to me, but some are really sick and have onset Alzheimer’s. First, when they sit down and go and ask them what they would like to drink. For drinking options, we have 2% milk. Skim, ice tea, prune juice, apple juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice or water. And we have packets of orange spice tea, red raspberry tea, black tea or green herbal tea. There are lots of choices for just the beverages!! I usually get the same people every night so I know what they would like to drink without me asking them, but sometimes I get their “usual” ready and they change their mind and want something different that night. The other servers and I have 3 residents that if they sit down in our section, we usually panic. They are EVIL. Those 3 residents are picky and bossy. One time, I had all three of them in my section. Let’s just say I did not have a good night at work. There was this really nice guy that lived there named Donovan, and he passed away. I started crying when I found out but my boss said it was very common in a nursing home.
For language, my group and I were assigned a book to read for what we call literature circles. My group was assigned the book The Rag and Bone Shop. This was known as the “Law and Order” book because it was about a boy being interviewed for the death of his 7 year old neighbor. I have always wanted to be in a book club because I think it is fun to talk about what you think about the book with your friends or peers. Yes, I liked being in a literature circle. I just wished my group talked more, we didn’t have much to say about the book because it was so short and we finished early. One of the girls in my group gave me ideas that I hadn’t thought about when I was reading the book. That’s what is nice about literature circles; you program another thought into someone else’s head or spark ideas for them. Some of us in the group did not see eye to eye on what the outcome was. The book was a murder case so we all put our heads together to try and see who could figure out the killer first. Not to brag or anything, but I guessed it right. The most interesting discussion we had was guessing how the murderer killed her. The detectives said it was with a heavy blunt object and she was found in the woods. A stick? A rock? That is for you to read the book and find out!!!
It was my brother’s birthday this past Saturday so to celebrate it early we went to the Avengers: Age of Ultron. I don’t want to spoil it, but I have nothing else to write about so I am just going to talk about what happened in the movie. It started off pretty weird, they were fighting these little robots. The Avengers (if you don’t know who they are) are a pack of MARVEL superheroes that fight off bad guys. The leader is Captain America (my favorite). He has a suit that looks like the US flag. He fights bad guys off with a shield that has a star on it. Thor has long stringy hair and a huge mallet type hammer that only he can pick up. There is a movie on just him that me and my friend like to watch. In the Thor movie, Thor tries Starbucks and he said “This drink, I like it. Another!” That part gets me every time. Anyway, back to the Avengers. There is a girl named “Natasha Romanoff” who goes by “Black Widow”. She is a trained assassin and is pretty kick butt. She fights them off and throws the bad guys so far, it’s pretty funny. And then there’s Hulk. He and Romanoff have a thing and only she can get him to calm down when he turns all big and green. Iron man, has a really high tech suit that lets him blow a fire type gas out of his hand and spray the enemies. Hawk Eye, has bow and arrows and is a wiz with them. He makes Katniss Everdeen look like an amateur.
Earlier this year, Mrs. Gregg, my science teacher gave us the option to write an essay to win a trip to tour and do workshops at a college. I thought “what the heck” and gave it a try. I really did not think I would get nominated, let alone win. That’s right, I won. I will be going to a college this summer and staying there for 5 days. They gave me a list of colleges and cities I can go to and I can pick one. The list includes: Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. San Fran and Dallas are already booked and Chicago has one spot left. I am leaning towards Boston or LA. I get to fly alone. How exciting would that be? I mean, who wouldn’t want to go to California or Massachusetts? I will be paying for my own airfare. My mom and I have been looking at flights and we found one for LA for 362$ round trip. Pretty awesome. I have traveled in planes with just me and my brother so I will be fine being alone. I’ll just listen to music and read on the plane. As sad as it is, I am not sure I can go. It cost 2,095$. I do not even have 1,000$. My mom said we could maybe get a scholarship and I will probably do some fundraising and garage sales. I really hope I can go. Plus, I have a job now, so I hope that will help!!
I started work on Monday, April 13th. I was really good the first night. I was training and following the lead server Rachel around. The second night was good too but I dropped a glass and it shattered. Today is Friday and I work tonight and tomorrow. I really hope I do not drop another glass. I am trying to get my best friend to fill out an application so she can work there with me. It would be so fun with her. She said she will think about it. I work tomorrow from 7 am to 2 pm and I am not looking forward to it. I get tired from working 4:30 to 7, how am I supposed to manage an 8 hour shift?? And, I haven’t work breakfast or lunch yet, and I’m doing both tomorrow. Lord, help me. I have my own section Monday, April 20th so I will have no help or trainer. My family says I will be fine but I still am not sure. I want to quit but I haven’t even had my first paycheck so how bad would that look. There is one girl I work with named Ashley. She is friends with my boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend so I thought she would hate me. We actually got along quite well. One thing I don’t like about my coworkers is that they talk bad about the elders we are serving. It makes me feel sad. We are here to make them feel welcome. Wish me luck tonight!
On Wednesday, April 8th, I walked into this rich nursing home and came out a changed girl. I had just gotten my first job. That’s right. I, Isabelle Miller am now Isabelle Miller, employee of Touchmark Nursing Home. Holly was the name of the woman who interviewed me. When I walked in I was really nervous. The place was gigantic and there were chandeliers and a polished brock fireplace. She took me back into the Silver Willows Meeting Room and asked me many questions; what are your goals? Why do you want to work here at Touchmark? My palms were sweaty, but I said the right things because she gave me a white shiny smile and said “you’re hired.” I was smiling ear to ear. I was going to be a server in the dining room. That sort of scared me.
I start today, Monday. I got my schedule last Friday and looked it over. I work Monday from 4:30 to 7, Wednesday 4:30 to 7, Friday 4:30 to 7 and Saturday 7 to 2. I am training all those days and then April 20th I have a section all to myself. What if I drop a plate or serve something to the wrong person? I cannot remember what the elders want to eat. I think I am freaking myself out. On Friday, I went and signed papers and had my picture for my badge taken. My family and friends say I will do good and I hope that they are right. I have had many weird dreams that I wake up confused and weirded out. For example, a couple nights ago I had a dream I was in a nice car, I think it was a corvette (not sure) that was midnight black. I was at Liberty for some weird reason. Lots of people were at Liberty and some men were jealous of my car and followed me home. They wanted my car but I would not let them have it, so they cut my telephone wire and tried beating me up with a pencil. I got scared and my mom just told me to calm down. She said I was overreacting. Then I ran outside, and my neighbors called the police for me. Apparently the men were harassing everyone on the street so they cops showed up very quickly. I woke up and sat there confused for a while then fell back asleep and had another dream.
This dream was about the Purge. The Purge and Purge Anarchy are movies where crime is legal for 12 hours. And I mean any crime….including murder. Okay, so in the dream I ran around and played a game with raw eggs. I kept chucking them at cars and played marbles with them. Then, my mom and I found this really fancy pool that had rich people in the shadows watching us. People were going crazy and blowing things up. My dreams are sort of interesting and funny but I should probably talk to the doctor about how odd they are. Roosevelt's inaugural address helped create jobs for people who were struggling in the Great Depression times. He used the quote "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."By this, he is saying that he would act swiftly to face the "dark realities of the moment". To me, this means that Roosevelt was proving to everyone that he could manage being a good president and making fair decisions. The New Deal talks about how he wanted to lower the unemployment levels in some cities. Also, it would issue a four day bank holiday to stop people from withdrawing money from the shanky banks.
The Breakfast Club is one of my favorite movies. It explains the life of 5 teenagers in detention on March 24th, 1984. They each come into Shermer high for different reasons. Clare is the "diva"of Shermer high school and she got detention for skipping school to go shopping. Andy is the wrestler who got in trouble for taping a guy's legs together and then ripping the tape off. Brian is the "geek" who does amazing in school and when he gets one B, he brings a gun to school to end his life. But, it was a flare gun. And it went off in his locker. Alison is labeled a "basketcase" and she is there in detention because she it bored and has nothing better to do. She is also ignored by her parents which is really sad. And lastly, John Bender. The Rebel. He has drugs in his locker and has detention every Saturday. The reason he's here this Saturday is because he pulled the fire alarm just as a joke. This movie is so funny, as the cast grows together just on one single day. They admit things to each other that no one knows. I connect to every one on different levels. At the end, Clare gives Alison a make over and then Andy the wrestler falls in love with her. This is my dad's and my movie, we watch it together every summer. It taught me to be who you want to be and have fun in high school.
